What Is StemWave?
At Waymaker Physical Therapy, we're always looking for ways to help our patients move better, feel better, and get back to doing the things that matter to them. That's why we're excited to now offer StemWave as another treatment option at our clinic.
StemWave uses focused acoustic wave technology to deliver mechanical energy to targeted areas of the body. It is a non-invasive approach designed to support the body's response to areas of muscle and joint discomfort while improving local circulation.
For people dealing with persistent aches and pains or struggling to make the progress they want, StemWave may provide another option to explore alongside their physical therapy plan.
What Is StemWave?
StemWave is a non-invasive technology that uses focused acoustic waves to stimulate targeted tissue.
Unlike injections or surgical procedures, StemWave is applied externally using a handheld treatment device. During a session, your provider moves the applicator over the area being treated while adjusting the intensity based on the area and your comfort.
StemWave is intended to provide relief for joint, ligament, tendon, and bone aches and pains by recruiting localized stem cells, turning off pain receptors, and to help improve local blood supply.
At Waymaker PT, we can also use the technology as part of our assessment process to help identify sensitive areas and determine where treatment may be most appropriate.
Who Can StemWave Help?
StemWave may be worth exploring for people experiencing muscle or joint discomfort that is interfering with their daily activities, exercise, work, or recreation.
Common areas where focused acoustic wave therapy may be used include:

It may also be an option for active individuals dealing with soreness following activity or people who continue to experience localized muscle or joint discomfort.
However, every person is different. StemWave isn't automatically the right option for everyone, which is why we start by talking with you about your symptoms, goals, and history before recommending a treatment plan.
How Does StemWave Work?
StemWave delivers focused mechanical energy into targeted tissue through acoustic waves.
When this mechanical stimulation reaches the tissue, cells detect the input and respond through a process known as mechanotransduction — the process of converting a mechanical stimulus into biological signals.
This response is associated with changes in local circulation and cellular signaling in the treatment area. In simple terms, StemWave provides controlled mechanical stimulation to the area we're trying to address while supporting the body's natural response.
During your session, we'll first identify the area you are having trouble with and use the StemWave applicator to locate areas of sensitivity. The treatment intensity can then be adjusted based on your response and comfort.
There are no incisions or injections involved.
